Biography of Tony White
Tony White, renowned animator, director, professor, lecturer, and author has been in the animation industry for almost 30 years, and currently teaches 2D animation and oversees the Sprite and Flash Animation production classes at DigiPen Institute of Technology. White began his career working with legendary industry professionals like award winning illustrator Ralph Steadman, animation gurus: Ken Harris (original lead animator of “Bugs Bunny,” “Roadrunner,” and others at Warner Brothers), Art Babbit (original lead animator on “Pinocchio,” “Fantasia,” and others at Disney), and personally assisted, then directed/animated for Richard Williams (3 time Oscar winner and author of “The Animator’s Survival Kit”).
In addition to teaching full-time at DigiPen, White founded and presides over The Animaticus Foundation, which he formed to preserve, teach and evolve the art form of traditional 2D animation in the digital age. He is widely known as the author of the definitive book on animation, called “The Animator’s Workbook,” which has sold almost 80,000 copies world wide, and recently released a subsequent title called “ANIMATION from PENCILS to PIXELS ~ Classical Techniques for Digital Animators,” published by Focal Press in August of 2006.
White has won numerous awards for a variety of projects and has completed and premiered last month, a short 10-minute film for the Tacoma Museum of Glass, entitled “Fire Gods,” on behalf of The Animaticus Foundation. White states that this current project is “a labor-of-love, animated account of ‘the history of glass and glass-making’, which embraces the talents of both my graduate students and exceptionally talented colleagues from the DigiPen Institute of Technology.” Utilizing 2D, 3D, and Flash animation, the film is expected to complete in January 2008.
